#1 I realized that I reviewed all those fancy SUV's and luxury cars in the past, so people might think I'm not used to driving simple, down-to-earth vehicles anymore. Wrong. I own one I suppose the VW Golf IV is so common, that nobody ever bothered with writing a review here in the forum.
12 Dec 2014. #6. It does sound like a gear linkage issue. A few years ago a had a Vauxhall Corsa which the gear linkage went on. There was a ball & socket connection on it which the socket got worn on allowing lots of loose play. If you can see your gear linkage give it a move by hand and see if you feel any play anywhere.
The flipside of this is hard-treated ex-fleet cars. Pay close attention to odometer readings and look for the usual signs of intergalactic mileages. Otherwise a used Golf Mk 4 is a sound purchase. Replacement Parts (approx based on a 1998 Golf 1.4 ex Vat) An exhaust system is about £65.
The 1.6L 16V engine has been installed en-mass in Volkswagen vehicles in recent times. The manufacturer recommends checking and, if necessary, replacing the timing belt every 55,000 miles, and then every 18,000 miles thereafter, however serious mistakes are often made when doing this.

These engines had two timing belts, one main one that drives the inlet cam then the other one runs behind the inlet pulley driving the exhaust cam.

Posted April 16, 2004. The 'Emissions Workshop' warning light on my 1.6 16v '03 Golf keeps lighting up. At first, the warning light flashes whilst the engine is clearly misfiring, then after several minutes, the light will remain on and the engine will appear to run ok.
